the devil who stole your present to give you your future

you ran away with devil
in the hopes that the devil
might show you the version
of heaven you wanted to see

and together you found it.

and u stood there
the thorns between
and the mirror.

she looked back at you
and she smiled.
why are you following me?, you asked.
it was you who came back, she answered.
i never left.

the heaven you ran away with the devil to—
it was nothing.

but the present
in colour-coated lenses
and the old rancid odour —
overwhelmed by signature perfume.

you sat down and began to cry.

you’ve never felt more alive.
